Drivers of U.S. Foreign Policy Lesson: Response Paper

Assignment 4100-A

During the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the United States maintained a small military, had limited diplomatic contacts with a select few countries, and collected tariffs. But as the country developed into a world power and then a global superpower, the Federal Government increased its national security administrative capacity, foreign engagement, and global responsibilities. The seminars and lectures of NSAIS should have given you a good sense of what sustained continuity and what drove change in US foreign relations from the late 1700s to the present. This assignment requires you to assess this continuity and change using concepts of international relations.
