QPME: History and Traditions of the United States Marine Corps: Ethics, Values, and Leadership Development

"Our current naval doctrine is based on the tenets of maneuver warfare as described in Fleet Marine Force Manual 1, "Warfighting," first published in 1989. Current and emerging concepts such as Operational Maneuver from the Sea (OMFTS) derive their doctrinal foundation from the philosophy contained in "Warfighting." Our philosophy of warfighting, as described in the manual, is in consonance with joint doctrine, contributing to our ability to operate harmoniously with the other services." (MCDP 1)

"This doctrinal publication describes a theory and philosophy of command and control for the Marine Corps. The intent is to describe how we can reach effective military decisions and implement effective military actions faster than an adversary in any conflict setting on any scale." (MCDP 6)

"This publication is focused on one of our key leadership principles: know your Marines and look out for their welfare. It is a companion to Marine Corps Warfighting Publication 6-11, "Leading Marines, and provides more detail to leaders about how to take care of their Marines through the five phases of the transformation process. It is a leadership tool that provides sound examples and methods for success."

“Leading Marines” is not designed as a reference manual; it is meant to be read from cover to cover. Its three chapters have a natural progression. Chapter 1 describes our Marine Corps ethos—who we are and what we do for our nation. Building on that understanding, chapter 2 covers the foundations of Marine Corps leadership. Chapter 3 addresses overcoming the challenges our leaders face.
