QPME: History and Traditions of the United States Marine Corps: Ethics, Values, and Leadership Development

Introduction

"An unwavering pride in self, unit, and service to country - It is not indoctrinated; it grows and manifests itself in the individual going through the gauntlet and attaining the tough goal of being accepted as a Marine - on the Marine Corps' terms, not the individuals. From such training, in which honor, courage, and commitment are honed, develops professionalism, leadership, and an unshakable confidence in everything a Marine is called upon to do."

~Chenoweth, et al. (2005) in Semper Fi

What Makes Marines Leaders?

The history of Marine Corps leadership, our values and heritage has been continuously written since the Continental Congress first raised two battalions of Marines on 10 November 1775. Since that time, our core beliefs of leadership have been influenced by some of our most notable leaders such as General John A. Lejeune, as well as our sister services in the U.S. Armed Forces, and subsequently influenced other fighting organizations. The result is today’s modern day Marine Corps – a highly unique organization with roots in Naval history and amphibious warfare – a Corps that takes pride in being the finest fighting force the world as ever known.

This QPME guide provides information and learning resources about the history and traditions of United States Marine Corps ethics, values, and leadership development. In this guide, you will find links to both online and offline primary and secondary resources, learn about key Marine Corps leaders and doctrinal publications, and set the stage for further self-study.
